Seven years ago, Boardman St. Luke parishioner Joanne Underwood was anxious, controlling, overwhelmed with feelings of responsibility, and physically and mentally exhausted.

Today, as a facilitator for Contemplative Outreach Northeast Ohio (CONEO), she assists others in finding a peace she eventually found in her own spiritual journey.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Father Ray Thomas, pastor of Our Lady of Peace Parish in Ashtabula, wrote this reflection upon his return from his recent sabbatical in Africa.

The horrific news coming out of West Africa about the Ebola outbreak and the threat of a terrorist attack by the Boko Haram in Nigeria were reasons my family and many of my parishioners wanted me not to travel to Africa for a sabbatical that I had been planning for the past year. My plans were to spend time in Nigeria, in West Africa, and then to visit Kenya and Uganda, in East Africa.
