Bishop Murry’s Statement regarding the Supreme Court Ruling on Same-Sex Marriage Print E-mail

June 26, 2015

Today’s Supreme Court’s ruling which clears the way for same-sex marriage was expected but unfortunate. Within the Judeo-Christian tradition, marriage is a permanent commitment between one man and one woman. As Catholics, we believe that to be God’s design for humanity. In keeping with the Scriptures, therefore, the Church will continue to encourage traditional marriage and support all families that want to grow in God’s grace.

While the Church disagrees with same-sex marriage, it is important to reaffirm that disagreement about an issue is not disrespect of a person. People with same-sex attractions, as all people, are created and loved by God and every human life is valuable from conception to natural death. Consequently, same-sex attracted people are and always will be welcome in the churches of the Diocese of Youngstown, where the saving words of Jesus Christ can be heard every day.

St. Basil the Great, who was bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia from 370-79, said this about the Holy Spirit:

“The titles given to the Holy Spirit must surely stir the soul of anyone who hears them and make him realize that they speak of nothing less than the Supreme Being. Is he not called the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, the Steadfast Spirit, the Guiding Spirit? But his principal and most personal title is the Holy Spirit.”

Joy and Gratitude Print E-mail

One evening last week as I was waiting for the news, I came across the end of a program on the life and ministry of Jesus. The Lord had risen and visited the disciples but they were still afraid and still hiding in the famous “upper room.” Suddenly, bands of fire circled the room and the Holy Spirit came upon them. In a moment, the disciples lost their fear, gained courage and were filled with joy and gratitude. They left the room with broad smiles and joined those who waited for them outside, determined to spread the Good News.
