Last January, I had the honor to preach at a Mass celebrating the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King in the Diocese of Phoenix. While preparing that homily, I came upon a quote from Dr. King that has lived with me ever since.

On behalf of the priests and deacons of the Diocese of Youngstown, I wish you the blessings of Easter.

 

May the Lord strengthen you through the reception of the Eucharist.

May He assure you of his love as you look upon the cross.

And may the Risen Lord lead you to new life now and for all eternity.

            As you read this column, the bishops of Ohio and Michigan, seventeen in total, are in Rome for our Ad Limina visit. The words “Ad Limina” are an abbreviation of the Latin phrase “Visitatio ad limina Apostolorum” which means “to the threshold of the apostles.” Since the 4th century, every bishop who leads a diocese is required to travel to Rome periodically to present a report on his diocese. According to Church law, this report must be made personally, except when the bishop is impeded by bad health.
