One evening last week as I was waiting for the news, I came across the end of a program on the life and ministry of Jesus. The Lord had risen and visited the disciples but they were still afraid and still hiding in the famous “upper room.” Suddenly, bands of fire circled the room and the Holy Spirit came upon them. In a moment, the disciples lost their fear, gained courage and were filled with joy and gratitude. They left the room with broad smiles and joined those who waited for them outside, determined to spread the Good News.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

At the beginning of Lent, I quoted from the liturgical theologian Peter Mazar. Permit me to do so again:

“For three days Esther fasted and Judith kept vigil, the exiles came home to Jerusalem, and the Hebrews marched to the waters of Marah.  For three days darkness afflicted the Egyptians . . . Jonah was entombed in the belly of a fish, and Paul waited in blindness. On the third day Abraham offered his firstborn son, God came down in fire and wind upon Sinai, the boy Jesus was found in ‘his Father’s house,’ and the man Jesus ‘performed the first of his signs at Cana in Galilee.’

Early Monday morning, Feb. 23, National Public Radio (NPR) presented a story about a man named Wil Smith (not the actor). It was the first thing that I heard that morning and it immediately captured my attention.
