“The Spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor.”


During a performance, when an actor speaks directly to the audience, it is called “Breaking the Fourth Wall.” The saying comes from the experience of being in a theater, where the stage is surrounded by three walls. But there is also an invisible fourth wall which the audience is looking through to see the action. If the actor talks directly to the audience, he is ignoring or breaking that invisible fourth wall.

In this column, I want to take a closer look at Lent and how we might best benefit from it. The word “lent” is a derivative of the old English word “lencten,” which means “springtime.” It was first used in the 12th century and it referred to the 40 days just before Easter.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on Feb. 10. The word “Lent” comes from an old English word that means “springtime.” Spring reminds us of spring cleaning and the new life in nature that develops after winter. In a similar way, this season of Lent can be a special grace for us as it is an opportunity to do some spring cleaning in our lives and enjoy new life in Christ as a result. We begin that process by publically acknowledge that we are sinners.
