Bishop George V. Murry, S.J., has appointed Msgr. Lewis Gaetano as president of the newly formed Stark County Regional Catholic School System, effective July 1.

The Stark County Regional Catholic School System has been created by joining together into one system the following schools: St. Joseph Elementary School, Canton; St. Joan of Arc Elementary School, Canton; St. Peter Elementary School, Canton; St. Mary Elementary School, Massillon; St. Barbara Elementary School, Massillon; SS. Philip and James Elementary School, Canal Fulton; St. Louis Elementary School, Louisville; Regina Coeli /St. Joseph Elementary School, Alliance; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School, Canton; St. Paul Elementary School, North Canton; and St. Michael Elementary School, Canton.

These 11 schools will now function as a single system, operated by a single Board of Directors, and administered by the president of the regional system. The system does not include either of the two Stark County Catholic high schools.

The president is the Chief Executive Officer and, as such, has the general charge and control of its personnel budget, educational and development programs, recruitment, business affairs and facilities. The president is responsible for the business aspects of the school, including finances, marketing and development, and fundraising.  The president is the overall leader and facilitator of the community of faith and bears ultimate responsibility for the integrity of the doctrine and practice of the spiritual life of the school. The president works closely with the principal, and in varying degrees, with other groups within the school community to provide leadership with regard to the purpose, values, goals and financial well-being of the school.

Msgr. Gaetano was ordained May 18, 1973, for the Diocese of Steubenville. He was incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of Youngstown on Aug. 4, 2008.  At Walsh University, North Canton, Msgr. Gaetano served as chair of the Theology Department, director of the Catholic Studies Institute, director of the Graduate Program in Theology, director of the Initiatives Program and university chaplain. He previously served as a member of the diocesan Priests’ Council.

Msgr. Gaetano is pastor of Christ the Servant Parish (St. Paul Church and Our Lady of Peace Church) in Canton, a position he will keep in addition to his new assignment.
