Four diocesan high schools compete in state speech and debate tourney Print E-mail

Four diocesan high school teams were among the 87 schools competing in the Ohio Speech and Debate Association Tournament March 2 and 3 in Sylvania, Ohio. 

Youngstown Ursuline’s orators finished 20th statewide. Top finishers for Ursuline included: Alex Stoneman – second in congressional debate; Adam Dwinnells – best presiding officer award in congressional debate who placed eighth in congressional debate; Mary Kate Kelty – semifinalist in declamation, eighth place; Dan Naples – semifinalist in congressional debate; Spencer Humphreys – quarter finalist in humor; Riley Burke – quarter finalist in program oral interpretation.

Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, with 20 competing, finished 21st. Earning special honors for Mooney were: Shannon Reardon – state runner up and national tournament qualifier for international extemporaneous speaking; Claire Driscoll and D’Ella Heschmeyer – semi-finalists and national tournament qualifiers for duo interpretation; Adriana Vennetti – quarter finalist for dramatic interpretation; Elizabeth Vennetti – quarter finalist for dramatic interpretation; Jolene Bassil – quarter finalist for informative speaking; and Andrew Neider and George Sdgreas – octofinalists for public forum debate.

Canton Central Catholic finished 47th. Top performers for Central included: Serena Billmanin – 11th overall in the state for congressional debate; and Anna Vaughn and Sophie McConnell – both quarter-finalists in congressional debate.

Warren John F. Kennedy tied for 61st. Cassidy Brozovich was a quarter-finalist in dramatic interpretation. He will also represent JFK at the National Catholic Forensic League Tournament in Washington, D.C., this spring.

The National Speech and Debate Association Tournament is set for June 17 to 21 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
