Bishop George V. Murry, S.J., will celebrate two diocesan Masses for Life in January, inviting all to pray for a greater respect for life at every stage.

Both Masses will mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Jan. 22, 1973, U.S. Supreme Court ruling which imposed legal abortion on all 50 states.

The first Mass for Life will take place Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Parish, 241 S. Main St., North Canton. The second will be Jan. 21 at 4:00 p.m. in St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., Youngstown.

At each Mass, expectant mothers, fathers and their families will be invited to receive a “Blessing of the Child in the Womb,” which was created to encourage prayer for and recognition of the child in the womb, and to foster respect for human life within society.

In addition, there will be a blessing of pilgrims attending – or having attended – the March for Life in Washington, which is set this year for Jan. 19 to remember Roe v. Wade.

A reception, including an “expo” of respect life information, will follow each Mass for Life. All are welcome. No reservations are necessary. Donations will be accepted.

In addition, each January, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops calls for “9 Days for Life” to remember the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Since that decision, it is estimated that more than 55 million abortions have been performed, affecting the lives of millions of parents.

This year, these “Nine Days of Prayer Penance and Pilgrimage” on the 45th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, is set for Jan. 18 to 26. To participate, go to www.9daysforlife.com to download an app, or arrange to receive text messages or e-mails for each day of the 9 Days for Life novena.
